Fermion, a subsidiary of Orion Corporation, is undertaking a major modernization of its Oulu plant with a comprehensive renovation of Manufacturing Module 5 (MOD5). This strategic investment reinforces Fermion’s commitment to delivering high-quality active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) while supporting customers with enhanced performance, safety, and flexibility.

A Future-Ready Production Environment

The MOD5 project represents a full-scale transformation rather than a simple upgrade. The module will be completely rebuilt with a new layout designed to accommodate advanced reactor configurations and optimized production workflows.
The upgraded facility will operate under strict current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards and incorporate cleanroom environments meeting Class D particle requirements. These improvements ensure robust product quality, reliable compliance, and consistent manufacturing performance for customer projects.

Enhanced Containment and Safety

A key focus of the renovation is expanding Fermion’s capabilities in handling high-potency compounds. The upgraded module will support OEB4 and OEB5 containment levels, enabling safe and efficient production of highly potent APIs.
Additional features such as advanced containment solutions, charging isolators, and improved personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols will further strengthen operator safety and minimize contamination risks.

Advanced Technology and Equipment

The modernization includes the installation of state-of-the-art equipment, significantly increasing process capability and flexibility. Key enhancements include:
Multiple glass-lined reactors (up to 6.3 m³ capacity)
Dedicated hydrogenation reactor with potential for increased pressure capability
High-performance centrifuge and pressure filtration systems
Modern gas scrubbing and vacuum systems
Automated process control with increased digitalization
These upgrades enable Fermion to handle a broader range of chemistries and complex processes while maintaining high efficiency and reliability.

Improved Logistics and Operational Efficiency

The new layout spans three floors and has been designed to streamline both material and personnel flows. Features such as airlocks, a dedicated forklift tunnel, and optimized technical spaces ensure smooth operations and reduced cross-contamination risk.
Automation will be significantly increased across the module, improving production consistency, reducing manual intervention, and enabling scalable manufacturing operations.

Significant Investment in Long-Term Growth

This investment underscores Fermion’s long-term commitment to supporting customer needs, expanding its high-potency manufacturing capacity, and maintaining a leading position in API production. The combination of advanced containment, modern equipment, and optimized workflows enables:
Greater flexibility for complex synthesis routes
Higher efficiency and reliability in production
Stronger compliance with global regulatory standards
Expanded capacity for high-potency APIs

Production start in upgraded module 5 is targeted for Q3 2027.
